Baroque Meets Cyberspace

The MuseumsQuartier is housed in what was once the Imperial Court Stables, an almost 300-year-old Baroque complex. Where once Lipizzaner horses were housed, now thousands of artistic masterworks of the 20th century and beyond are exhibited, all in a complex in which the architects Ortner & Ortner subtly blended the old with the progressive.
The MuseumsQuartier comprises three avant-garde buildings: the Kunsthalle Wien, which is used for temporary exhibitions, is built entirely of red brick and looks more like a factory building than a museum; the 24-meter tall modern white cube that is the Leopold Museum; and the broodingly futuristic, dark stone edifice, that is the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig (MUMOK), or Museum of Modern Art.
