Museum der Moderne Salzburg

Salzburg's dramatic new museum of modern and contemporary art, the Museum der Moderne, sits atop the sheer cliff face of the Mönchsberg, 60 meters above Salzburg’s historic old town.

The historic Water Tower pushes into view through the glass staircase: the striking 19th-century tower almost looks like a framed painting and so does the park. The view from Mönchsberg alone is like a piece of art vying with those exhibited inside.

Clad in minimalist white marble, the museum was designed by the young trio Friedrich, Hoff, Zwink of Munich. The museum has two exhibition levels which bracket a restaurant with a large terrace. Its permanent collection features a fine collection of paintings and sculptures from the 20th century.
