Christmas & New Year in the Mountains

Tyrolean traditions and cinnamon aromas abound during the festive season in Innsbruck where majestic, snow-capped mountain peaks provide the perfect backdrop for the enchanting festive spirit of the Heart of the Alps.

Christmas at a glance.

Christmas Markets
A large light Christmas tree, a carved nativity scene with life-sized statues at Domplatz and a great number of lovingly decorated stalls make you forget about everyday life and transport you back into another era: about five weeks before Christmas Innsbruck starts its Christmas Markets - the start for the festive season. Stalls invite you to look and maybe buy a present. Have a drink of hot tea or the stronger "Glühwein" (hot spicy wine) or try some of the spicy or sweet Christmas food.

Christmas Procession
The Christkind ("Christ Child") is the traditional Christmas gift-bringer in Austria. The Christkind is a sprite-like child, presumably the incarnation of Jesus as an infant, usually depicted with blond hair and angelic wings. Children never see the Christkind, as parents will always tell them that the Christkind just disappeared before they could see it. As today the Christkind is facing increasing competition from Santa Claus there are several interest groups aiming at preserving this old tradition.

In Innsbruck the Christkind was "revived" in 2004 with a colourful procession of some 400 children between eight and twelve years of age. The parade starts in Leopoldstraße and ends in front of the Tiroler Landestheater.

New Year at a glance.

It has been a tradition for 12 years now to celebrate the New Year in Innsbruck's historic town right in the Mountains.... A liveley program for the 30.000 visitors consists of Live-Music and shows on several stages will accompany you from 6 pm until 1.30 am. The Highlight will be at Midnight: huge fireworks, lighting up the mountains, accompanied by the traditional waltz - the Donauwalzer - with people dancing to its tunes in the streets and "hugging New Year".

In the evening the "Silvesterlauf" - a specially for this occasion set up short marathon - will also take place.

The 30th December is dedicated to the children's New Years celebration.
