175 years of Sacher-Torte!

16-year old apprentice cook Franz Sacher had to stand in for the chef, who had fallen ill just when a group of illustrious guests was expected for an exquisite dinner. For the required “new dessert in honour of the occasion” young Franz rose to the challenge brilliantly, creating a delicacy that has since conquered the world.
As generations of Sacher family members added elegance, luxury, exquisite cuisine and refined atmosphere for indulgence in the Hotel Sacher Wien & the Hotel Sacher Salzburg, the cake is now an icon of the sweet life of Vienna.
And one of the cities most international “ambassadors” as approximately 120.000 of the 360.000 hand-manufactured Sacher-Torte are exported each year! Convenient, as the unchanged old recipe keeps the cake fresh for three weeks. Some say it actually tastes better once it has “rested” a little.
And so it seems that the Austrian saying “love goes trough the tummy” is taking on a literal meaning here – once you have tasted the light chocolate cake with a layer of apricot jam beneath a chocolate icing, you will understand why they say that “There is only one original. Since 1832.” - and why you’ll always want to come back for another piece.
Because of course – to pamper yourself with a piece of Sacher-Torte is one thing, enjoying it admidst the grandeur & charm of the Austrian capital and the heart of Europe, Vienna! – that’s a another story to be told…
