Austria's Classics - at a second glance!

Just as visitors to Sydney can’t leave without seeing the Sydney Opera House or the Harbour Bridge, travellers to Austria have a checklist of culinary and lifestyle sights and experiences that are a must.

Carpe Diem Salzburg
(c) Carpe Diem

However, apart from those must-sees such as Schönbrunn in Vienna, the Golden Roof in Innsbruck or a Mozart Concert in Salzburg, Austria’s cities have plenty in store for repeat visitors or those travelling off the beaten tracks.

Here are some recommendations for your next trip to Austria:

Live Art, Love Life in Vienna

Art for breakfast? Start your day in the stylishly elegant ambiance of the Cupola Hall of the Museum of Fine Arts: fortify yourself at the exquisite (all you can eat) buffet with Viennese dishes and sweets before wandering through the museum’s galleries (including special guided tours). Spend the afternoon shopping Vienna’s art & style stores (such as Lichterloh and Nachbarin) or simply drop into the Moebel where guests can purchase a piece of the constantly changing furniture while sipping at a good cup of coffee. Finish your day at Hollmann Salon, set amidst the Heiligenkreuzerhof, the most beautiful and oldest courtyard of Vienna's city center.

Innsbruck - The mountains have never been so close

Some other day, travel west to Innsbruck where two grand sights have re-opened: The Swarovski Crystal Worlds opened its doors again after extensive renovations and, secondly, the new funicular right next to the Imperial Palace in the old town of Innsbruck Hungerburg (Nordkettenbahn) has commenced operations: travel up to the (2334 metres) in only 20 minutes (or stop at the Alpine Zoo on your way).

Arts & Delights in Salzburg

Return back to Vienna via Salzburg and see for yourself that Sound of Music is not its only claim to fame. First, have “more than just” breakfast at Carpe Diem, a surprise-enchant-amaze addition to Salzburg’s culinary landscape. Visit the Museum of Modern Art up on Mönchsberg before you make your way to Hangar-7, a world-wide unique combination of flight hangar, art gallery and restaurants: At Hangar-7, historic airplanes and formula-1 cars of collector Dieter Mateschitz (grand Austrian and owner of “Red Bull”) are on display (open to the public – admission free of charge!). At restaurant Ikarus, a different top-flight international chef takes over the kitchen every month. And it's all under the auspices of the "Chef of the Century": Eckart Witzigmann.
