Driving in winter

(c) Austrian National Tourist Office
Driving in snowy or icy conditions bears certain security risks!
Since 1 January 2008 it is compulsory to either fully equip your car with winter tires or use snow chains on the driving wheels at all times between 1 November and 15 April of each year. Snow chains are however only allowed when the road you are going on is mainly covered in snow/ice (this does not include melting snow!).
Bear in mind that this is obligatory and neglicence is subject to fines up to EUR 5000,- and/or the requirement to stop the use of the vehicle altogether.
If you are renting a car, make sure to check with your rental company prior to your arrival!
