Austrian Cuisine

To fully understand the variety of Austrian Cuisine, it is useful to know something about Austria’s geography and historical background.

Situated at the heart of Europe and therefore the meeting point for numerous peoples, Austria has always been a melting pot of different cultural influences.

Until the WWI Austria represented about 50 million people, 16 different languages and at least as many "ethnic" ways of cooking.

The cuisine at the Imperial Court in Vienna continuously established new trends for the whole country, which were readily followed by middle class households, albeit in a simplified and more nourishing form.

As a matter of fact, it is Viennese cuisine that has made the Austrian way of cooking so popular all over the world, but all our nine provinces can claim to have made their own unique contributions to the most well-known Austrian dishes.

The classical Austrian set meal consists of nutritious soup (usually with noodles or dumplings added), a main course with a meat dish, a side dish and salad, and a dessert (cake or soufflé).

And here you find a selection of traditional Austrian dishes.
