Flowers for Eulalia

An arrangement of fir twigs, yarrow, saxifrage, and rock cross decorated with colorful ribbons, small mirrors and tinsel.

Eulalia, preened and primed that way, slowly trots along with the rest of the herd. At the beginning of September the cow herds are brought down from the high pastures. The cows wear elaborate headdresses for the occasion, and the clanging of their bells accompanies brass bands.
In the past the mirrors and bells were believed to ward off evil demons along the way. Today the colorful spectacle attracts thousands of spectators.
