Rudolf, born 1812 in Vienna, was the son of the famous lithographer Jakob von Alt (1789- 1872). Both Rudolf and his brother Franz (born 1821) follow in their father’s footsteps. The brothers assist with the work in the atelier and help coloring Jakob von Alt’s lithographies. Later Rudolf studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna before traveling extensively to improve his skills.
On his walks through the Austrian Alps and northern Italy von Alt focused exclusively on landscape paintings and developed a remarkable talent for expressing certain peculiarities in nature. A visit to Venice in 1833 inspired him to paint city views and architectural buildings. Rome, Naples, Sicily, the Lombardian lakes and the landscapes of Galicia, Bohemia, Dalmatia and Bavaria all served as models for his paintings. In 1863 von Alt visited Crimea to paint the estate of Empress Elizabeth. In 1867 he was offered a teaching post at the Vienna Academy, which he refused.
As young artist Rudolf von Alt focused mainly on the realistic reproduction of nature while his later works are reminiscent of French impressionism. His city views were famous for their unusual perspectives.
Rudolf von Alt is co-founder of the Wiener Künstlerhaus; in 1897 he became honorary president of the Wiener Secession. The painter died on 12 March 1905 in Vienna, the city which was the main motif of his late works.
