Max Goldmann was born on 9 September 1873 in Baden (Lower Austria). During his training as bank employee, the son of a Jewish businessman took private acting classes, and in 1890 he debuted at a small theater in Vienna.
From 1902 until the beginning of Nazi rule in 1933, he worked as a director at various theaters in Berlin. From 1905 to 1930 he managed the Deutsches Theater ("German Theater") in Berlin, where he engaged Bertolt Brecht and Carl Zuckmayer as script editors. In addition, Reinhardt managed the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna from 1924 to 1933.
In 1918 Reinhardt purchased Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg which soon became the heart of artist scene until its expropriation by the Nazis in 1938. In 1920, Reinhardt established the Salzburg Festival with Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Every year until the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi-governed Germany in 1937 he performed Hofmannsthal’s "Jedermann" (Everyman) there. In 1929 he founded the Reinhardt-Seminar in Vienna, arguably the most important German-language drama school. His genius in the production of Shakespeare's drama " Summer Night's Dream" brought him world fame overnight.
1938 Reinhardt emigrated first to England, then to the United States. In 1940 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. At that time, he was married to his second wife, the actress Helene Thimig. Reinhardt died on 31 October 1943 in New York. With his lavish stage productions, Max Reinhardt is considered the founder of the new production theater.
