Vienna

In the days of the Habsburgs the nobility from all corners of the Monarchy converged on Vienna and built mansions and palaces here. Their domestic staff came from Bohemia and Hungary, from Friuli and Galicia, from Dalmatia and Bukovina, and they brought their native culinary traditions with them.

Café Central

The traditional Viennese coffee house is one of the hallmarks of the Austrian capital. Cafés like Griensteidl, Demel and Central are repositories of the city’s historical heritage and have always attracted the writers of the day, and they have bequeathed to posterity their first-hand records of their lives and times.

Exploring the enticing world of Vienna’s renowned confectioneries is a voyage of discovery to boundless delights. Among innumerable traditional confectioners, perhaps the most celebrated is the one-time Imperial & Royal Confectioner Demel.

Vienna is rightly proud of its age-old cuisine, but it boasts a thriving contemporary culinary scene, with fashionable new bars, inns, cafés and restaurants appearing the whole time.

Vienna is the world’s only capital city which doubles as a wine producer. With 700 hectares of vineyards, the city’s wine makers produce mainly Veltliner, Riesling and Zweigelt, which can be savoured in the cosy atmosphere of a traditional ”Heuriger” wine tavern. This makes Vienna a paradise for anyone with a taste for enological adventures.
