Haus der Musik

The Haus der Musik is a modern, interactive theme museum boasting real and virtual rooms to introduce the visitor to the fascinating world of music.

Infotainment, Edutainment and Entertainment – these are the three catchwords characterizing the Haus der Musik offering the visitor a lively introduction to the history of Austria’s great composers on 6 stories.

The centerpiece of the Haus der Musik is the covered, air-conditioned courtyard with its range of shops selling instruments and top quality HiFi equipment, the workshop of the violin master maker Anna Hohenegger, and “Cantino”, a popular café-cum-bar inviting the visitor to relax and enjoy.

Museum of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Today the former private rooms of Otto Nicolai – founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra – accommodate historical gems from the archives of one of the world’s most famous orchestras.

The annual New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which was first staged in 1939, is probably one of the world’s most famous concerts reaching a worldwide television audience of over one billion. The “Haus der Musik” boasts a purpose-made concert hall where you can listen to the only authorized abridged version (35min.) of the original Vienna New Year’s concert. Top sound and picture quality together with the festive atmosphere combine to recreate the fervor and passion of the original event.

Compose your own waltz with the interactive Waltz Dice Game. Even Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn let themselves be inspired by dice games! Throw the dice eight times, for instance, and have your own personal Vienna Waltz created from eight random melodies from an incredible 1.6 million possibilities. All composers-to-be are presented with a diploma of their composition!


Vienna’s Great Masters
Vienna achieved worldwide fame as capital of music thanks to its many ingenious composers including Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauß, and Gustav Mahler, as well as the Second Vienna School represented by Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. These outstanding artists are honored with displays of documents, models, costumes, theatre tickets, scores, notes and personal items. Movies and databases enhance the overall experience.

The “Virtual Composer”
Pick up a virtual baton to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra! The musicians follow the tempi and rhythms suggested by you!

Sonosphere
The Sonosphere is made up of various rooms dedicated to sensual perceptions. Hear the first sounds that a prenatal infant experiences in the womb, investigate larger-than-life instruments, discover the voice as the most natural instrument, experience the most fascinating sounds ever, and take advantage of the opportunity to produce your own CD.

Music between the Present and the Future – Futuresphere
What could the future of music and music making look like? The “Brain Opera” was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and allows the visitor to create and experiment with music using the hyper-instruments in the “Mind Forest”. The sounds created through movements, voices and touches are tossed into the “Future Music Blender”, which is always be in the process of automatically creating new Brain Opera music.


The Event Hall accommodates up to 150 visitors. Café-Restaurant Cantino caters to the hungry and thirsty visitor, and is an ideal place to relax while reveling in the views of Vienna and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
