Burg Forchtenstein

Forchtenstein Castle is more than just an imposing castle: With over 20,000 exhibits the Forchenstein Castle Museum ranks among Central Europe’s largest private museums

Burg Forchtenstein

In addition to extensive arms and an armor collection the museum also accommodates some valuable objects and trophies from the Turkish wars as well as silver jewelry and exotica from far away countries.

Originally founded in the early 14th century, Forchenstein Castle was rebuilt by the Esterházy family between 1635 and 1652 as a powerfully fortified stronghold o protect the Habsburg monarchy from the invading Turks.
The interior’s most notable features are the painting gallery with its monumental war paintings, the historic hunting tools and trophies, and precious pieces of booty from the Turkish wars. The Arsenal accommodates, among other things, the equipment of an entire regiment from the 17th century.

The over 300-year old Arts and Wonder Chamber has been opened to the public in 1998 and features some 500 interesting objects: the Silver Room with the Augsburg silver table, jewelry, turned ivory art, silver miniatures, watches and exotica from foreign countries.
With over 20,000 exhibits in 32 rooms Forchtenstein Castle is one of Central Europe’s largest museums.
