Hallstatt Salt Mines

In 1734 a 3000-year old miner was found preserved in the salt. This legend of this man dominated the theme of the Salt Mines history.
The salt mine is located a thrilling funicular ride above downtown Hallstatt.
Highlights include one of the longest banisters, a 14000 sq meter illuminated subterranean lake, Europe’s oldest wooden stairs dating from 1344 BC, the famous Hallstatt hearts on the walls, and the underground salt chamber. The prehistoric Hallstatt burial grounds are one of the old world’s most important: some 4,000 people were buried here between 1,000 – 500 BC.
The Dachstein - Hallstättersee region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, not least for the 7,0000 year old mining history of Hallstatt.
