Festung Hohensalzburg

Founded in 1077, the massive fortress was altered and increased on several occasions over the centuries, before being arranged as a residence in late gothic style. Until 1803 Hohensalzburg was seat of the Archbishops; in 1861 Franz Joseph abandoned Hohensalzburg as fortress. For a while afterwards it served as barracks and today is a museum.
The interior boasts impressive state rooms and remarkable vaults testifying to the fortress’ rich history. Other attractions include a ride with the fortress funicular, the Rainer Regimentsmuseum, the Puppet Museum and a good multi-vision show. Today the state rooms, the romantic courtyard and the bastion play host to all kinds of events.
