In 1606 Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had this palace and its gardens built as a luxurious private residence for Salome Alt. The baroque master builder Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt rebuilt the palace in the first quarter of the 18th century, and it was modified again later in 1818. Among those adapatiations were the ceremonial staircase with sculptured cherubs carved by Raphael Donner.

The famous Marmorsaal, a marble-and-gold hall where already Father Leopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl performed and which was used for the festivities of the princes, is today regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful wedding halls.

The Mirabell gardens were built in 1690 following the plans of the famous architect Fischer von Erlach. The gardens are not only famous for their abundance of flowers, but also for their strange dwarf garden and the maze with the "hedge theater".
