Schloss Hellbrunn

Hellbrunn palace was built between 1612 - 1619 by the Italian Santino Solari for the archbishop Markus Sittikus; with its expansive parklands, the famous Wasserspiele trick fountains and the mechanical theater featuring water-operated wooden figures, the Italianate Hellbrunn palace is one of the finest examples of mannerist architecture.
Water has always been dominant at Hellbrunn palace. The water gardens boast a number of ingenious features. A large table with ten chairs, for instance, suddenly spurts water jets. Mysterious grottoes, water-operated figures and sly fountains all have water tricks in store surprising guests at all nooks and corners of the palace.
The Hellbrunn "Monatsschlösschen", which was built in the record time of only one month, contains the excellent folklore museum of the Salzburg Carolino Augusteum.
The adjoining Hellbrunn Zoo features free-flying vultures and Alpine animals that largely roam unhindered.
