Silberbergwerk Schwaz

According to legend a maiden one day discovered colorful, shimmering stones above Schwaz. The stones were soon recognized as ore and shortly afterwards the first ore and silver mines as well as metal production sites sprung up.
The silver was mainly used to make coins and jewelry – a fact that greatly added to the Habsburg’s wealth. Copper was used for the production of everyday goods and as alloy for bronze and brass. The “Golden Roof” in Innsbruck was also built with copper from Schwaz.
Today guided tours take visitors through the fascinating underground mines. Ride the mining car 800 meters down into the “belly” of the mine and explore a legendary and mysterious underground world.
