Festung Kufstein

With some 26,000m² the 13th-century fortress occupies an area that is larger than Kufstein’s old town.

Kufstein

The fortress was first mentioned in a document in 1205 when it was still owned by the Bishops of Regensburg. In the course of the centuries the Festung Kufstein went through continues enlargement and modernization and had more and more fortified features added; since 1924 it has been in the possession of the city of Kufstein.

The "Kaiser Maximilian" Panorama Cable Car takes visitors to the entrance of the Festung Kufstein which is located on a hill above the city. Worthwhile visiting are the two museums, the former stage prison and the exhibition of archeological findings. One of the most interesting features of the fortress is the "Heroes" Organ, world’s largest open air organ, which was built in memory the soldiers killed during WW I. Concerts are given at midday daily during the summer months.

The restaurant with its comfortable parlors and beer garden serves good food and drinks. Multi-course Knights’ Dinners can be booked for groups of 10 or more persons. Guests wear vintage clothes; compliance with the strict table manners is, of course, strictly controlled.

Today the castle serves as representative venue for all kinds of events.
