Burg Hochosterwitz

Burg Hochosterwitz, one of Austria’s most impressive castles, was built into a steep rocky hill. The approach up the hill to the castle leads through 14 fortified gates.

Burg Hochosterwitz

The castle was first mentioned in a document from 860 AD. In 1571 Baron Georg von Khevenhüller acquired the castle; between 1570 - 1586 he had it enlarged and, to deal with the threat of Turkish invasions, fortified with an armory and 14 gates. The names of the single gates are written down in old documents.

A funicular leaves from the first gate up to the entrance of the castle. The castle museum has a collection of weaponry, art objects and amours, among them the one of Carinthia's tallest man who measured over two meters.
