Dom zu Gurk

The high Romanesque Dom zu Gurk is a three-aisled basilica with a twin-towered west façade, a gallery, a crypt and three apses. Over the centuries the basilica has been changed several time and thus represents the different styles of the different epochs.
Through the outer porch, richly decorated with wall paintings and stained glass, and the west portal with its narrow pillars you get to the small inner porch. The basilica’s interior is remarkable decorated and there are some art-historically very valuable pieces including the Galler altar (a late gothic winged altar piece), the Samson tympanum relief, six St. Hemma relieves, a baroque high altar, a cruciform altar ornamented with a depiction of the Pietá by the Viennese sculptor Georg Raphael Donner, and a baroque pulpit.
Especially impressive is the Cathedral Crypt which lies under the choir, has one hundred columns, and contains the beautifully decorated sarcophagus of St. Hemma.
Other highlights include the Episcopal Chapel which has some remarkably well-preserved frescos dating from 1260, and Austria’s largest and oldest Lenten veil.
South of the Dom zu Gurk is the former charnel house (Mortal Fear Chapel); south-west of it is the cemetery with a gothic lantern for the dead.
