Schloss Belvedere

The Austrian Galerie Belvedere, one of the world’s most important museums, presents a wide range of art objects from the middle ages to contemporary art.

Copyright: Belvedere

This splendid baroque palace was built for Prince Eugen between 1714 bis 1723. After his death Maria Theresia acquired Schloss Belvedere and had the painting gallery accommodated here. At the end of the 19th century the palace was the residence of Franz Ferdinand, the successor to throne whose assassination in 1914 lead to WW I. The Austrian Gallery has been in the Belvedere since 1919.

The palace consists of two building complexes, the Unteres (Lower) Belvedere and the Oberes (Upper) Belvedere.
The Oberes Belvedere is an elongated building which accommodates, among others, the conference and audience hall, the mirror cabinet and the main hall with beautiful ceiling frescoes – a gift by the pope. Today the Oberes Belvedere houses the most important collection with 19th and 20th century art sections.

The centerpiece of the Unteres Belvederes is the large marble hall with beautiful statuary such as The Apotheosis of Prince Eugene fashioned in marble by the Baroque sculptor Balthasar Permoser. It also accommodates the Austrian Baroque Museum. The Orangery hoses a collection of Austrian medieval art. Oberes and Unteres Belvedere are connected via a long garden laid with beautiful ponds and mazes.
