Kaisergruft

Kaisergruft is located in the basement of the Kapuzinerkirche, or Capuchin Church, and is the principal place of interment for the Habsburg dynasty. In 1618 Empress Anna had disposed by will that a Capuchin monastery with a burial site should be built for her and her husband Emperor Matthias within the Vienna city walls.
Since 1633 146 Habsburgs were buried in the crypts, among them 12 emperors and 19 empresses and queens. The lovely and distinguished tomb of Maria Theresa and her husband Emperor Franz I. Stephan von Lothringen was designed by Balthasar Ferdinand Molls. Their monument is very elaborate while the remains of her son Josef II lie in a simple casket.
The last emperor to be buried here was Franz Joseph I. (1916). The sarcophagi of Empress Elisabeth and Crown Prince Rudolf are also located here. The hearts of the Habsburgs were lain to rest in the Augustinerkirche.
