Built on Corals

The cellar of Weingut Zieregg is located in the town of the same name and has a special claim to fame: about 20 million years ago a coral reef formed underneath today’s vineyard.

These cliff walls were integrated into the vinery's various rooms and are now not only used “to demonstrate the nature of the local terrain”, but also to ensure an appropriate level of humidity for the oak barrels which are being increasingly used at the estate. Once construction was finished, the protruding concrete parts were covered with soil. As vines grow on the building it blends extremely well with the landscape’s natural contours.
The centerpiece of the vinery is the presentation and tasting room which affords fantastic views all the way to Slovenia.
More fascinating views are offered on the way from the Large Barrel Cellar to the Small Barrel Cellar. The walls of the almost cathedral like rooms are covered in natural shell limestone and hold the vinery’s top wines.
