Without question: Everyone knows of the idyllic city on the Salzach, over whose baroque houses and palaces, the salty white fortress is enthroned. Everyone thinks to know it: the home of Mozart, the festivals and the “Mozartkugeln” - the famous nougat-marzipan-chocolates. The only thing whiter than Salzburg’s fortress is the city’s stronghold of modernity. And that is certainly no coincidence. A museum sits atop the Mönchsberg , including a chic restaurant with a view, which brought the city on the Salzach into the present – for everyone. The museum, together with the Rupertinum with its original building near the festival house, offers 3,000 m² (of this 2,300 m² on the Mönchsberg). It provides space for current exhibitions and presentations of the extensive collection (Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Alfred Kubin, Hermann Nitsch, Oswald Oberhuber, Erwin Bohatsch, Bertram Hasenauer, Michael Kienzer, Elke Krystofek, Jürgen Messensee and many more).

Toni Stooss has been running the Museum der Moderne since January 1st 2006. Stooss, who followed in the shimmering footsteps of former figure skater Agnes Husslein (currently director of the Austrian Gallery Belvedere), was founding director of the Kunsthalle in Vienna and director of the Museum of Fine Arts Bern.
