From Passau via the Wachau to Hainburg

A tour through the beautiful Danube Valley, with side-trips through romantic towns and charming wine regions to the easternmost town in Lower Austria at the Slovakian border.


From Passau to Linz:

Danube bend near Schlögen:
Here the Danube takes a heavy turn and starts winding itself through a narrow valley - great scenic beauty!

Wilhering abbey:
Cictercian abbey founded in the 12th century.

Linz:
Capital of Upper Austria; Austria's third-largest city stretching on both sides of the Danube. Domicile of Anton Bruckner.


From Linz to Grein:

St. Florian:
Abbey of the Augustinian friars - Abbey church with the famous Bruckner organ.

Enns:
Remains of Roman and Carolingan times; beautiful old town

Steyr:
Beautiful old town with houses from the late Gothic era, as well as from the baroque and rococo.

Mauthausen:
Memorial site of the 2nd World War concentration camp

Grein:
Little river town with Austria's oldest town theater dating from the rococo period and Klam Castle in the vicinity.


From Grein to Krems:

Wachau:
Danube valley between Melk and Krems and one of the most beautiful stretches of this river boasting vineyards, apricot gardens and picturesque villages.

Melk:
Benedictine abbey, one of Austria's most famous and superb abbeys.

Castle ruins of Aggstein:
Dating from the 12th century, located on the right shore of the Danube, former seat of the Kuenrings.

Spitz, Weissenkrichen, Dürnstein:
Picturesque villages along the Danube, famous wine-growing areas

Göttweig Abbey:
Splendid Bendictine abbey on a hill above the Danube

Krems:
Oldest town of Lower Austria (1130), old town with renaissance-style patrician houses.
Monastery of Und: Former Capuchin monastery, now housing the "Wine College of Und" (wine academy and wine samplings).


From Krems to Hainburg:

Klosterneuburg:
Augustinian abbey from the 12th century, abbey church with the world-famous Altarpiece by Verdun.

Vienna:
Federal capital. City of music, former imperial residence, Austria's cultural and spiritual hub.

Petronell-Carnuntum:
Ancient Roman base; important Roman excavations; Archaeological Park

Palaces of Niederweiden and Schlosshof:
Hunting palace and summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy

Hainburg:
Easternmost town of Lower Austria, close to the Slovakian border. Town gates from the 13th century. Castle ruins from the 11th century town museum.
