Skating against the backdrop of snow-covered mountain peaks, curling on frozen lakes and ice-hockey on giant spaces – all this is possible on Austria’s natural ice rinks.

SalzburgerLand

Carve your tracks through a magical frozen world: skating on natural ice always makes for a memorable and fun nature experience! Skating is an ideal way to experience the beauty and tranquility of the SalzburgerLand and its lakes in the winter. In addition to frozen Wolfgangsee, Wallersee, Fuschlsee, Goldeggersee and Zeller See, the province offers a multitude of other natural ice rinks, some of which offer floodlamps and disco music.

Burgenland

Neusiedlersee: Europe’s Largest Ice Rink
When the temperatures drop below zero, then Neusiedlersee turns into Central Europe’s largest natural ice rink. With a frozen surface of over 320 km² the lake offers plenty of space for all kinds of winter sports enthusiasts: skaters, ice sailors and surfers and even ice cyclists come here to pursue their hobbies. If runners and spikes are not your cup of tea you can just take a romantic stroll across the ice. And since excercise in fresh, crisp air makes you thirsty there is a stall selling hot drinks (weekends only). The promenade near Strandbad Neusiedl is floodlit until 10 pm.

Carinthia

Weissensee – All Kinds of Ice Sports
Every year 6.5 km² Weissensee, located at the Austrian-Italian border, attracts hordes of winter sports enthusiasts who come here to indulge their passion for ice skating. Weather conditions permitting an Ice Master grooms skating loops up to 20 kilometers in lenghts, rinks and ice-hockey fields and curling lanes. The ice cover is up to 40 centimeters thick and allows for other sports as well including walking, cross-country skiing and even horse-drawn sleigh rides. Every year at the end of January or beginning February the Lake provides the setting for the 11-City Tour, featuring 50km, 100km and 200km speed skating races. And for the International Ice Golf Tournament in February the lake is turned into a golf course.

Frozen Fun at Pressegger See
Carinthia’s second largest lake also offers great winter fun amid beautiful surroundings. The lake offers skating loops, curling lanes and ice-hockey fields.

Millstätter See
Skating is one of the most popular winter sports besides skiing. All towns around Millstätter See offer natural and/or artificial ice rinks. In really cold winters even deep Millstätter See freezes over and offers plenty of space to skate, carve and have fun.

Längsee
Längsee is located in the district of St. Veit/Glan and is one of Carinthia’s last unspoilt lakes. It is in idyllic location at 560 meters above sea level and offers peace and relaxation as well as all kinds of activities.

Lower Austria

Lunzer See
Weather conditions permitting, Lunzer See is a great winter playground offering ice skating and curling. With a length of 1600 meters and a width of 500 meters, the lake makes for great skating, ice-hockey and curling. Sleds and curls are available for rent on-site.
On the weekends most inns and huts around the lake are open and sell hot tea and mulled wine.

Upper Austria

Almsee – Idyllic Nature
Almsee is a popular destination in summer and winter. In the cold season curlers and skaters come to enjoy the sunny weather and crisp air. For winter walkers there is a beautiful footpath around the lake.

Laudachsee: Skating and Eating
At 881 meters above sea level, at the foot of Traunstein, is Laudachsee. This lake is beautiful set amid snow-covered mountains peaks and offers wonderful skating for nature lovers. The cozy hut on Ramsauer Alm serves its guests hot tea and good food.

Traunsee
In really cold and frosty winters chances are good that one or the other lake in the Traunsee region freezes over. Whenever the weather permits it, people grab their skates and enjoy that magic feeling of skating through the winter wonderland.

Langbathsee/Offensee
When the upper Langbathsee and Offensee are frozen over (usually from mid January to mid February), then nothing stands in your way for first-class skating fun. In warm winters you can always head to the artificial rinks in Gmunden or Bad Ischl.

Styria

Ace Age in the Grebenzen Nature Park
The nature park offers three beautiful lakes which all offer great surroundings, crisp air and wonderful skating. 0.5 ha Martteich in St. Lambert is floodlit in the evenings for a night of skating under the stars. Grasluppteich in Zeutschach offers a large frozen surface for all kinds of ice sports as well as different activities and events such as riding courses for children.

Leopoldsteinersee: A Mountain Lake with a Difference
Leopoldsteinersee is beautifully located amid mountains and offers superb skating in winter.

Grundlsee
Grundlsee is Styria’s largest natural lake and often nicknamed the Styrian Sea. The 420 ha lake, which is located at 712 meters above sea level, is not frozen over every year but the last years where all great.

Tirol

Schwarzsee
Skating enthusiasts will love wintry Schwarzsee where the surface is groomed so you can glide effortlessly across the ice. The thickness of the ice cover is checked on a regular basis.

Tristachersee: A Gem in the Dolomites
Located at the foot of the Dolomites, Lake Tristachersee offers a romantic setting for skaters. Enjoy the peace and quiet of nature while carving your tracks through the ice.
On its way from Amlach to Hotel Tristacher See the free ski bus passes by the lake several times a day.
