Design Hotels in Styria

Foto: Kreuzwirt
Kreuzwirt am Pössnitzberg

Kreuzwirt am Pössnitzberg
In 2006 the Kreuzwirt – an undistinguished inn from the 1950ies – was converted into a stylish boutique hotel. The spacious rooms afford great landscape views; in some rooms the bedroom is separated from the living room by a bathtub.

Lifestyle hotel daniel
The daniel is youthful not only because it is the youngest – and only 4th – member of design hotels in Austria, but because it offers trendy and modern 4-star comfort at very affordable rates. The daniel differentiates itself from conventional hotels through its unconventional approach – not least regarding their price structure (Euro 59 / 79 per room, breakfast Euro 9 per person). The rooms, too, are minimalist in their design: there are no knickknacks and no space-consuming furniture, not even wardrobes; instead there are clothes racks with hanging drawers. A painted glass wall separates the bathroom (with daylight and Raindance shower) from the bedroom – an architectural trick that makes the rooms look larger. Blond wood, pastel colors and whites add to the hotel’s fresh and youthful appearance. Amenities such as DVD players, free highspeed Internet access and 24/7 snack service cater to the target group which consists of young business travelers and artists.

Augartenhotel art & design
The Augartenhotel opened at the turn of the millennium and is a good example for a lighthearted and carefree approach to modern ideas. The glass façade of the cube reflects the backyard goings-on of Graz, the interior looks like a museum for contemporary art. Each room is decorated with works by modern Austrian artists.

Hotel Zehn Zimmer
What makes this brand-new hotel (finished in 2006) so special is the fact that it looks as if it had always been there, as if it hadn’t been built into the landscape but grew out of it. One of the first things you will see upon arrival is the old wine cellar with its rough foundations – symbol of and leitmotif for the town’s identity. The rooms all afford superb views. The centerpiece of the hotel is the terrace. The garden boasts a garden house with sauna, a swimming pools is half indoors, half outdoors with one part lowered into the mountain.

Spa & Conference Hotel Loipersdorf

Spa & Conference Hotel Loipersdorf
With its low profile, almost spartan, exterior this four-storey complex looks more like a school than a hotel. The 4-star Spa & Conference Hotel was designed by an English team of architects and is a great example of British understatement. The hotel nestles inconspicuously in the landscape, right next to the Thermal Baths, yet removed from the street noise and goings-on. Despite their minimalist design the rooms and suites are great for a weekend of cocooning. The rooms’ luxury is created by amenities such as walk-in wardrobes and large terraces, cozy seatings, first-class beds and the arrangement of the bar, sitting and sleeping areas. Movable dividers allow you to integrate the bathroom into the living room.

Apartmentanlage Holzbox Planneralm
It was the architect’s goal to create a modern, enjoyable and inexpensive accommodation for young travelers, and after a construction phase of only 3 months the Holzbox was finished in August 2005. The basic concept for this “wood box” was to offer great lodging for youth groups and their supervisors. Individual accommodation units were assembled at the factory and fitted with standard features such as kitchen, bathroom and all necessary lines, sockets and supplies. The Holzbox is a 3+ star youth hostel that offers all kinds of modern amenities including sauna, ski boot drier and fully equipped kitchens.

Schiestlhaus am Hochschwab
Schiestlhaus was opened in September 2005 and is a superb example for energy-efficient and eco-friendly building in high Alpine regions. The shelter is located at 2154 meters above sea level, amid a wellhead protection area on Hochschwab. The Schiestlhaus is 100 percent energy self-sufficient – including water purification and sewage disposal – while offering an unusually high standard of comfort for mountain huts. The house greatly relies on solar energy with the south-facing window panes absorbing heat; in order to minimize thermal loss, the façade is closed to the north, east and west. The Schiestlhaus gives guests a truly eco-friendly holiday experience in a peaceful natural environment.
