Design Hotels in Vorarlberg

Hotel Post
Hotel Post
Innovative architecture designed and realized by the prestigious architect Oskar Leo Kaufmann for his sister and hotel manager Susanne Kaufmann – this is the Hotel Post in Bezau today. The hotel caused a stir for its annex which consists of individual modules. The old basement was topped with an event hall made of glass; on top of this cube the architects put two stories of five prefabricated modules each which serve as the hotel’s rooms; each module comes with a private balcony. The floors and all furniture are made from solid wood, the bathrooms are separated from the bedrooms by an almost transparent glass wall. The hotel is a modern and sleek concrete, wood and glass complex.

Silvretta Haus
Stützpunkt Bielerhöhe/Silvretta Haus
The edifice, located in a largely undeveloped high Alpine region on the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße at 2040 meters above sea level, was built by the Vorarlberg Illwerke AG in 1992 as a shelter and is now also used as hotel. With its sweeping façade the building follows the rocks’ stratification; the rooms fan out towards the lake. The wooden roof structure is reminiscent of the 30ies whereas the solar panels are a clear indication for our modern times. Wide, cascading stairs give access to the three upper floors.

Hotel Krone
The Krone in Au is often called a “picture-book inn” as it is located in the heart of the town, right next to the beautiful baroque church. The original building has undergone several reconstructions and expansions, the last of which dates from 1998. The architects Johannes und Oskar Leo Kaufmann created a true showpiece of prefabricated architecture: the saddle roof and module-like rooms with a total of 36 beds were built and moved to site within four weeks only. The hotel’s most characteristic feature is its curtain-like lamella façade which, when lighted by night, lends the exterior a three-dimensional look. The crude exterior is offset by a luxurious interior that features all the amenities of a modern four-star hotel.

Martinspark Hotel
Martinspark Hotel
A ship’s belly seems to be floating above the hotel’s entrance: this construction is supported by four pillars, covered in sheet copper and has narrow bands of windows through which you can see the building’s steel constructions and accommodates a restaurant; a connecting passage covered with wood slats gives access to the main building. In front of the hotel, at ground-level, is a rectangular box with the same wood slat paneling. This superstructure above the entrance to the underground car park accommodates meeting and conference rooms.

Hotel Adler
Hotel Adler
The original walls of the old Adler Hotel, which was built in 1917, served as starting point for Erich Strolz’ design. Strolz’ emphasis was on clean lines and simplicity – a design which he accentuated with an unconventional yet understated wood façade. A few years later a glass extension was added containing 11 hotel apartments, two seminar rooms, a multi-use hall, a sundeck and a climbing wall. The new complex consists of a prefabricated construction of reinforced concrete with wood, glass and solar elements. The old and the new building are connected by a glass corridor.
