Added Time In The Inn

If you are craving hearty home-cooking, a cozy ambiance and joviality, then Austrian inns are your place. Below you find the best places for some added time.

WTV/Alessandri

The Schweizerhaus in the Vienna Prater is one of the city’s largest eating houses: the shady beer garden seats 1800 hungry guests. Also large are the portions of roast pork hock, the Schweizerhaus’ signature dish, which is best washed down with a cold, freshly-drawn Budweiser. www.schweizerhaus.at

World-famous for its traditional beef dishes is Plachutta of which you find three in Vienna. Their Tafelspitz (boild beef), beef salad and roast joint with onions are simply delicious. www.plachutta.at

Near Stephansplatz you find Vienna’s oldest eating establishment (open since 1447) offering dining areas with low, vaulted ceilings and a shady beer garden: the popular Griechenbeisl serves hearty Viennese home-cooking served by an international staff who speaks English, Italian and French. www.griechenbeisl.at

The Augustiner Bräustübl in Salzburg is Austria’s largest beer tavern offering several drinking halls and a beer garden seating 1500. To get the beer, which is stored in wooden barrels, you choose a thick stoneware mug from the racks and carry it to the beer tap. Food can be bought in the "Standlgang", a line of kiosks selling a traditional Austrian fare. www.augustinerbier.at

Gasthaus Überfuhr not only offers great home-cooking but also excellent views of the Salzach, the old town of Salzburg and the fortress. A country-style inn in the center of the city … www.ueberfuhr.at

Kuglhof is located in Maxglan, a bit outside the city center but well worth the trip: the new chef perfects old Austrian specialties by giving them a modern touch. The Kuglhof is one of the few inns to which the Stiegl Beer is still delivered by horse and cart ... www.kuglhof.at

Innsbruck’s only restaurant with terrace in the old town is the “Weißes Rössl”: the inn, which is located near the Golden Roof, has a 500 year old tradition of spoiling guests with excellent Tirolean specialties. www.roessl.at

Winner of numerous Gault Millau awards, the "Wilder Mann" near Lans is offers excellent Tirolean cooking in a cozy ambiance. www.wildermann-lans.at

Klagenfurt’s oldest inn is the “Zum Pumpe” in Lidmanskygasse 2 and serves traditional Carinthian specialties. Other good options for hearty home-cooking are the Bierhaus zum Augustin in Pfarrhofgasse 2 or the Gasthaus zum Landhaushof. www.gut-essen-trinken.at
