Vienna and Wine

Before you first visit a “Heurigen” you best familiarize yourself with the “how-to’s” of these typical Viennese wine drinking establishments: first you have to study the Wienerlied, the typical wine garden song of Vienna which guests usually start to sing after three glasses the latest.

Secondly you should know that no beer is sold at a Heurigen – it is prohibited by the Vienna Heurigen Law. And thirdly that you can “only” order wine of the house, red and white. The wait staff may only serve drinks. For food you choose from a buffet where you also pay.

Vienna is a modern metropolis in the heart of Europe that managed to retain its special charm and cozy ambiance merry with wine in its many beer and wine gardens. Vienna boasts some 700ha of wine growing areas within its city limits - and that’s world-wide unique. The vintner’s wine taverns are located inside the vineyards and make for wonderfully quiet greenspace oases in the city and often come with fantastic views of Vienna.
