シシィ (1837 - 1898)

Empress Elisabeth, or 粘isi・as she became known, was born on December 24, 1837 in Munich. Aged fifteen, the daughter of Duke Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria travelled with her family to the Upper Austrian spa of Bad Ischl, the 廃earl of the Salzkammergut・ The purpose of the trip was to introduce her elder sister Helene to the then twenty-three year-old Austrian emperor, Franz Joseph I.

Her mother痴 plans were upset though when the emperor fell in love with the young Sisi instead; the next day the two were engaged to be wed. Elisabeth and Franz Joseph were married on April 24, 1854. Sisi conquered the hearts of her subjects with her sympathetic and natural manner. What began as a great romance, however, soon ended in sadness and loneliness, to which Sisi gave expression in her poems and diaries. She was used to a free, unconstrained life. The seriousness and attention to strict court protocol, which her new life as empress demanded, were at odds with her sunny disposition. Franz Joseph worshipped Sisi, but could not simply put aside the interests of his empire and his fifty million subjects for her benefit. Sisi sought solace from loneliness in travel, but remained, in her heart, isolated. She also had to endure personal tragedies, including the suicide of her son, crown prince Rudolf, in 1889. On September 10, 1898, Sisi was assassinated in Geneva by an Italian anarchist, Luigi Luccheni.
