Temperatures

Precipitation is quite evenly distributed over the year. May, September and the first half of October tend to be the driest, April and November the wettest periods. Again, altitude determines the precipitation pattern; while high-level areas in the Alps may have an average rainfall in excess from 2 m per year, the flatlands of Lake Neusiedl have only 60 cm annually.

From June to August light thunderstorms are quite common (a word of caution for the hikers and mountain climbers above 2,000 m: even in summer storms may entail heavy snowfalls!).

The winter snow cover lasts from December to March in the alpine valleys and from November to May in higher regions. It becomes permanent above about 2,500 m.
