“When I sing, I think I am flying.”
With the earliest documented tours in the 1400s, the Vienna Boys’ Choir is arguably the first to tour internationally. Today, with four touring choirs, they still spend much of their year on the road, singing at approximately 300 concerts per year, delighting an audience of almost 500,000 people worldwide.
The Choir also has a long tradition of collecting unusual songs en route: there is a recording of the Vienna Boys’ Choir performing a Navajo song on a 1930s schellack. This tradition has continued for almost a century now, and the choristers sing in any language they come across. Their music is a language that is understood everywhere. Says 11-year-old Victor: “You come to a place that is totally different from home, the people speak a different language, the houses are different, and the food is different. But when we start singing, people clap as they do at home.”
The Silk Road - Songs Along the Road and Time
Music is for everyone. This spirit is the underlying theme for the newest project of the Vienna Boys' Choir. “The Silk Road” is the title of a stunning feature documentary that shows the choristers as they have never been seen before. Focusing on the Choir’s tradition of participating and sharing in the world’s musical heritage, the acclaimed Austrian director Curt Faudon travelled with the Vienna Boys Choir for over a year and offers unexpected insights into life at one of the world’s most famous music schools. Join the Vienna Boys' Choir at home, during their nomadic life in Korea, Japan, Canada, the US, and on the Silk Road itself to experience the passion for music that unites cultures around the globe.
The film’s soundtrack is a wonderful mixture of medieval chansons, Renaissance music and pieces by Schubert, also including unexpected highlights from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, China and Mongolia.
Film and soundtrack will be available for purchase at the website of the Vienna Boys' Choir (www.wsk.at) starting Mid-December.
