Showcase of Media Art in Linz

Ars Electronica Center – Museum of the Future
Ever since its opening in 1996, the Ars Electronica Center has functioned as the prototype of a “museum of the future.” With its interactive approach to mediating visitors’ encounters with content ranging across the entire spectrum of Virtual Reality, digital networks and modern media, this facility serves a broad user base. Ars Electronica’s CAVE was the first ever to be installed outside the USA; it and similar VR infrastructure at the ICC in Tokyo are the only ones in the world that are accessible by the public. The Humphrey II flight and diving simulator featuring a new 3D underwater world is one of the museum’s most popular installations. A construction project running until 2009 will add a 4000-m² glass-and-steel extension to the Ars Electronica Center that will provide additional exhibition space as well as room for labs, ateliers and offices.
Ars Electronica Futurelab – Laboratory for Future Innovations
The Futurelab is a model of a new type of media art laboratory in which artistic and technological innovation makes for reciprocal inspiration. The members of the lab’s project teams bring a wide range of knowledge and skills to their assignments; their approach is characterized by interdisciplinarity and international networking.
The Futurelab’s broad spectrum of activities includes the conception and realization of exhibition projects and artistic installations, collaborative R&D work with academic associates, as well as joint ventures with partners in the private sector.
The Ars Electronica Festival of Art, Technology and Society is held annually in early September in Linz. Festivalgoers visit exhibitions and installations and attend symposia dealing with a particular theme each year. The Prix Ars Electronica is one of the world’s most highly esteemed awards for creativity and pioneering spirit in the field of digital media. Prizewinning works are singled out for recognition at a ceremony held during the Festival.
