Literature in Linz

The hub of literary activities in Linz is the StifterHaus, the center for language and literature in Upper Austria located in the former home of poet Adalbert Stifter.

Copyright: StifterHaus

Adalbert Stifter was born in 1805 and spent much of his life in Linz, where he was a school superintendent, painter and writer. It was also here that he died in 1868. Since 1950, Adalbert Stifter’s residence has served as a center for scholarly research on the author’s works. The facility houses the Upper Austrian Literature Museum, space for an ongoing programme of special exhibits, the Stifter Commemorative Room showcasing hand-written documents, pictures and historical furnishings, as well as a library containing approximately 17,000 volumes. The StifterHaus also regularly stages readings of contemporary literature and publishes texts dealing with literature, the works of Adalbert Stifter and the language spoken in the Province of Upper Austria.
