    A Magical Day in Vorarlberg

"We loved the walk up the Hoher Freschen with our kids. We hiked up and had snacks at the Freschen Hütte right at the top. Even in June we walked over snow to reach the summit. The 360-degree view was amazing, as was the small chapel on the way down. We saw a farm on the way down and the farmer took our boys to show them newly born twin calves. It was the most magical experience for our sons aged 9 & 6. They have never forgotten it. Vorarlberg is so peaceful and scenically spectacular, we love it."

    Pedal Boating in Kitzbühel, Tirol

"Two years ago during summer, I visited friends in Tirol, not far away from Kitzbühel. As it was really hot, we decided to go for a swim instead of hiking, so we went to lake Schwarzsee. We rented a pedal boat and jumped into the water! It was so nice and refreshing and the scenery with the high mountains in the background covered with snow was just breathtaking. We couldn’t get enough of the nature around us, swimming and having a wonderful time on the pedal boat at the same time."

Skiing and Fun in Zell am See & Saalbach, SalzburgerLand

"The skiing in Zell am See and Saalbach was amazing. I would recommend SchnapsHans-Alm at the top of Schmittenhöhe for its atmosphere outside. I would also recommend the hotel Lebzelter in Zell am See, they were so friendly and helpful. The hotel itself has so much history and is in just the right location in Zell am See. Villa Crazy Daisy in Zell am See is very good for relaxed atmosphere and possibly the best beer in Zell am See."

Travelling from Vienna to Innsbruck with the ÖBB

"There are few, if any, places in the world which can beat my homeland, Scotland. Austria is the exception. The people are friendly, the food is great, the scenery out of this world and the public transport is simply envious. I cannot recommend highly enough ÖBB for getting from city to city or town to town. We have travelled with them from Germany to Tirol and back on several occasions and it is one of the highlights of the holiday."

Ropeways and Austria's Best Cocktails in Zell am Ziller, Tirol

"Zell is in a lovely sunny wide part of the Ziller valley, where 3 different mountain ranges meet so lots of variety in walking - but our favourite is to head for the most eye-catching rock face above the village - the Gerlosstein. Take a cable car up to its foot and then its a fairly easy walk up to the 2,100 m high point for views that stretch from the Inn valley to the high ridge along the Italian border; or alternately be brave and take the direct route up the face, via the 380 m long fixed ropeway of the Klettersteig. Then back to the hospitality of Zell - our favourites are the Hofer's Wirtshäusl for its great food and service, and the Englhof for its official 'best cocktail bar in Austria' award. Looking forward to our next visit already."

Experiencing Tirol in Summer and in Winter

"I've been to Zell am Ziller in both summer and winter, and loved it in both. In winter, the local 'Zell Arena' ski area is one big playground; spreading over 4 mountains, with over 50 fast and modern lifts, good snow and snow making, fun parks, jumps and video runs, plus great cafes and après-ski stops. You have the options of easy transport and combined tickets with Mayrhofen and the Hintertux glacier, or you can go to smaller, quieter areas where locals ski alongside tourists. Plus lots of choices for quieter winter walks, and off-slope activities (skating, spas and pools). Then in summer, lifts back in action for walking high on the ridges and to mountain huts; or just exploring the sheer variety of the area. Friendly, fun and relaxed."

    Skiing in Tirol

"I have always skied in Austria. It is where I learned to ski over 10 years ago and I cannot imagine skiing anywhere else. It is not only the beautiful scenery, great snow and tasty food, but the friendly people and wonderful après-ski that I always experience. The smaller resorts always have such a history and authenticity to them, every year that I'm not there in the ski season I get incredibly jealous! Hopefully I will return soon!"

Cycling and Deep Gorges in Carinthia

"Kärnten seems to be off the tourist trail, which is a shame because the scenery, lakes and mountains are fantastic. The food is excellent, wherever you go. Activities are brilliant, being able to cycle beside the river Drau and its nature park. The Tscheppaschlucht is an amazing adventure into this deep gorge - before you come out to a beautiful 'fairy land' and enjoy a well-earned Bier."

Hot Chocolate in Hallstatt & a Lakeside Walk in Gosau, Upper Austria

"Once we arrived in Hallstatt on a quiet October morning, we just walked the charming streets of Hallstatt and enjoyed some hot chocolate near the market square. Later, around noon, we stopped for lunch at the ‘World heritage inn’ – Steegwirt. A restaurant I can highly recommend for its cosy and traditional ambience, its very friendly hospitality and its delicious dishes for a good value.
Since neither my boyfriend nor me are very sporty people, we decided to finish off the day by walking leisurely around the beautiful, dark green ‘Vorderer Gosausee’ lake."

A Story of Kindness, Consideration, and Love in the City of Salzburg

"My favourite travel experiences in Austria are many from my first visit to Salzburg in September 2000 - so good we returned in December. After that, we visited Vienna the following December and then back to Salzburg in '03, which is my most memorable holiday - not necessarily for the right reasons. After suffering a serious injury in an accident on an excursion, I found myself being operated on and having to spend a few days in the main A&E hospital in Salzburg.
It was the kindness, consideration and help given by everyone from the paramedics to all the hospital staff, along with the help given by the hotel to my uninjured companion in ensuring that they were well looked after. Then there was the start of the journey back to Edinburgh on 24th December 2003. The two paramedics taking us up to Munich were truly amazing and so helpful, even giving both of us small bags of Christmas biscuit type treats.
But what topped everything was the sunrise over Salzburg that morning. I have never ever seen one like it since, one of nature's true wonders. It reminded me of how my mum described a rainbow when I asked her when I was a wee boy: Rather than go into the scientific explanation she simply said "it's magical". That sunrise was the same.
So, thank you, Austria and your people.
I have been back a couple of times since, most recently to Vienna in January."
