Canoeing on the river Drau

Canoeing is the ideal means for discovering one of Austria’s last natural paradises

Then the canoe is moved to a sand bay and pushed into the shining green river. Before long you glide on the gentle waves and feel transposed into a distinct world. The Drau is one of the last river landscapes of the southern Alps, which have preserved their natural state. For centuries the river was used for transporting ore and coal; today it is a protected area stretching on 66 kilometres from Oberdrauburg to Sachsenburg.-  Carinthia’s ecological lifeline. Guided canoe tours may last from half a day to several days and include romantic campfires and overnight stays. Most of the time, however, you spend on the boat, savouring the soft quietude of nature and  the wild river landscapes and watching  grey herons on the shore. They definitely feel as comfortable as we do.
