Carinthia, located in the middle of the Alps-Adriatic region bordering on Italy and Slovenia, is a unique natural landscape for relaxation and enjoyment. The many inviting bathing lakes with their warm, clear waters provide hours of active fun and moments of sheer happiness in the sun.
Enjoy the unique “hip” style of Lake Wörthersee
Carinthia’s largest lake combines many advantages in one place. Seeing and being seen is what counts on warm summer evenings, as the last rays of the sun dip down into the lake in a golden light and you sip your first cocktail in one of the fashionable beach bars. You can then treat yourself to a delicious dinner at one of the 27 award-winning restaurants around the lake shore, which serve specialities of the local Alps-Adriatic cuisine such as freshly caught Carinthian salmon. For those who like the active life there is all the variety of a cycle tour around the lake, on a racing bike, an e-bike or a mountain bike, whichever you prefer. You can enjoy a journey through time on a cycle tour that takes in the well known architecture of Lake Wörthersee. The splendid villas dating from the Renaissance period are the dominant feature of the landscape, and with their magnificent views over the lake have influenced the work of famous personalities such as Brahms and Mahler. If you would rather leave the shore and take a trip over the peaceful, turquoise waters of the lake, you can try the new trend sport of “stand up paddling”. There are several hire centres located all around the lake offering different options. For a relaxing hour or two, you should visit Werzer’s Badehaus. Nowhere else can you find such a harmonious combination of the traditional and the modern. The building, which dates from 1895, has been lovingly restored, and since 2013 has enjoyed all the advantages of a modern spa: lake saunas, a pool which is heated throughout the year, atmospheric “oases of peace” and a gourmet restaurant will fulfil your every desire.
Enjoy getting fit at Lake Klopeiner See
Reaching up to 28 degrees in summer, Lake Klopeiner is one of the warmest bathing lakes on the sunny south side of the Alps. The free “Kärntner Seenfitness” [fitness by the lake] programme is available to all visitors to the region. From May to September, you can choose from the various sports on offer every Monday to Friday. A professionally trained guide is always in attendance to offer tips and advice. In addition to swimming courses and trend sports, unique scenic cycle tours are offered. New this year is the “6 lakes” tour. As the name suggests, this takes you past six sparkling lakes on a 54 km tour which makes a fantastic family day out. Spontaneous swimming breaks on brilliant summer days are a pleasure for the body and the mind. The region and its lakes is thus truly a “lake lovers’ paradise”. Those who like to swim purely for pleasure can enjoy unforgettable moments at family-friendly lakeside pools, with their shallow entry points and turquoise-blue waters.
Warm water and idyllic Alpine scenery: welcome to Lake Weissensee
At over 22 degrees, Lake Weissensee is the warmest lake at this altitude in the Alps. A trip on the pleasure raft is a culinary and scenic delight for the senses. Gliding almost noiselessly over the lake, you are served delicacies prepared from fish caught in the lake, together with fragrant wines. Younger guests are looked after by Nature Park Ranger Robert Röbl, who takes them on a tour of discovery on and in the water. While “fish watching”, children learn more about water as a habitat, while anti-reflective glasses ensure a clear view of the magical underwater world of Lake Weissensee. A little further south, in the picturesque Gailtal valley, is Lake Pressegger See, where children of all ages can enjoy happy hours of play and fun in Carinthia’s first “experience park”. A special tip for food lovers is the lakeside tavern in the evenings, which offers a 12-course “tasting menu” every Monday.
