“The Umgang Bregenzerwald consists of walks through 13 villages, and each village has its own special theme.”

Take a creative walk through the Bregenzerwald

Old farmhouses mix with modern buildings: local cheese stores vie with finely detailed craftsmanship - the Bregenzerwald locals surprise with their everyday imagination.
Why do Bregenzerwald villages look the way they do? What are the values and ideas with which they are imbued? The twelve village walks of the 'Umgang Bregenzerwald' try to answer these burning questions, but achieve much more. The walks, which vary in duration from an hour and a half to four hours, guide you through the region's past and present, teach you about the locals and their way of life and amaze you with the inhabitants' diverse creativity.

Wood-shingled farmhouses stand cheek-by-jowl with contemporary buildings, there are massive cheese stores, or a part of a village only accessible by bridge. The Bregenzerwald region has always been at pains to use only natural, local raw materials, be it wood from the forests or milk from neighbouring farms. It may take a while for the most impressive aspect to sink in, though - the authenticity of the people here, reflected in everything they do and which makes you feel that you are old acquaintances, even if it's your first time here.

“You can glean so much information about the village life and local people from individual objects. There is a lot to discover.”

The "Werkraumhaus" in Andelsbuch presents itself as a showcase for the region's handicrafts. The inviting wooden roof and glass façade merge the boundaries between inside and out, bringing the scenery inside.

There is a different, but equally unusual project in Krumbach, where architects from seven countries have designed bus shelters which create an in-depth dialogue between Vorarlberg traditions, building design culture and handicrafts.

Generally speaking, the region is pervaded by the fascinating combination of tradition and innovation. The Women's Musem in Hittisau, which impressively highlights women's cultural work, is the only one in the world.

To really experience the impact nature has in these parts, visit the open farm of the 'Metzler Naturhautnah' farm in Egg. In addition to the show dairy, herb garden and the stables where cows and goats live, visitors can now see the production of whey-based cosmetics. In the visitors gallery, see and smell how whey, medicinal plants and high-quality essences are made into cosmetics and care products.

Bregenzerwald Alpine and Mountain Cheese GenussRegion

Bregenzerwald and cheese - they belong together

Time on the mountain pastures and good hay lend the Bregenzerwald alpine and mountain cheeses their distinctive tastes. The alpine cheese is produced in around 90 so-called 'Sennalpen' (alpine pastures) during the summer months, and milk from the valley is used for the mountain cheese. Cheese production is thereby possible the whole year round in the 17 cheese dairies. Bregenzerwald Alpine and Mountain Cheese became a certified 'GenussRegion' (culinary region) in 2005.
