“The Wachau area has such a special ambience. You can look out over the Danube and the beautiful surrounding nature. That's really relaxing and causes you to slow down.”

The delights of the Wachau World Heritage Trail

Encounter the local culture and culinary highlights while exploring the idylic Wachau Heritage Trail overlooking Danube river.
The picturesque wine villages and shady sunken roads, flower-filled gardens and sun-drenched vineyards all enjoy a view of the Danube valley. The charming countryside around the Wachau World Heritage Trail draws visitors back time and again, especially as the 180-kilometre hike is hardly ever boring. This is ensured by the picture-perfect Renaissance towns and many fortresses, ruined castles and palaces along the historic route. The Wachau is one of the world's most charming wine-growing regions, featuring stone terraces and steep vineyards, and the World Heritage Trail lays the most wonderful places in the Danube valley at visitors' feet. Because so much exercise gives you an appetite, there are countless roadside taverns en route waiting to spoil the hungry hiker. Austrian hosts' zest for life is also reflected in their love of food, and it is easy for visitors to match it given the home-made specialities and elegant wines. Fluffy apricot dumplings, prepared with Wachau apricots, of course, are a particularly delicious speciality.

You don't have to climb up high to obtain a splendid view. A hike through the picturesque Wachau area reveals many an astounding panorama.

One of the best views on the World Heritage Trail is from the Ferdinand Watch Tower, which overlooks the historic towns of Dürnstein und Krems. From the Dürnstein Kanzel there is a fantastic view of the Danube loop between Dürnstein and Weißenkirchen.

The ruins of Aggstein Castle, one Austria's most famous fortresses, also provide an extensive view of the countryside, vineyards and Danube. If you don't want to explore the idyllic region on your own, many local vineyard owners, fruit growers or forestry and wildlife experts are happy to act as guides and show visitors their favourite spots.
