Edgy and Authentic

Linz is a little bit different. This “City of Smart Tourism” has historic beauty aplenty: Its expansive main square – located right by the Danube – and its quaint Old Town have a relaxed and authentic feel.

But Linz is also defined by a constant desire for change and innovation. Once primarily an industrial centre, Linz has become a pioneer when it comes to culture, art and technology. Home to a harbour that doubles as one of Europe’s biggest graffiti galleries and the cutting-edge art-slash-technology museum Ars Electronica Center, Linz is a destination for travellers looking for the unfamiliar.

Two Brits in Linz: In Search of the Perfect Selfie

We sent BFFs Joanna and Emily from London on a mission: Visit Linz and bring back the perfect selfie. But their visit turned into much more than that – they discovered a city full of creative energy and surprises. See for yourself:

Now Make It Yours!

Considering Linz for your next city trip now? Use Joanna and Emily’s itinerary below, then pick, choose and adapt to make it yours!

Mural Harbour (00:10) & Sandburg Beach Bar (00:28)

Joanna and Emily started off their visit with one of the most impressive and unusual locations Linz has to offer: the Mural Harbour. More than 200 graffiti by international artists have transformed the docklands into an open-air gallery; tours here include a graffiti crash course and creating your own piece. At the bank of the Danube – a favourite hang-out spot for locals – the two friends enjoyed a cocktail at Sandburg (“sand castle”) bar which features a man-made sandy beach.

Or Alternatively…

Discover the Danube: Take a river cruise or a bike trip along its banks. If you’re looking to cool down, get down to Donaustrand (“Danube beach”) in Alturfahr, where you can swim or give wakeboarding a try.

Ars Electronica Center & Deep Space (00:36)

A must-see for Joanna and Emily was the Ars Electronica Center, Linz’ “museum of the future”. Showcasing (media) art, cutting-edge technology, and interactive objects that combine the two, the AEC is like no other museum. Its “Deep Space” – a unique projection space with large, ultra-high-resolution 3D images, some of them interactive – let our Brits experience ski runs and outer space up close.

Or Alternatively…

If you’re in the mood for fine art, visit Lentos Art Museum and its impressive collection of contemporary art, including works by Schiele and Klimt.

Built in the 1920s and 1930s in the New Objectivity style, the old Linz Tobacco Factory is a sight to behold for architecture lovers. In recent years, it has been turned into a space for creative businesses and events.

Culture Quarter (00:56) & City Centre (1:15)

Next, Joanna and Emily paid a visit to the Culture Quarter (OÖ Kulturquartier), home to museums, an arthouse cinema, event spaces and a variety of restaurants. Every year, a different unusal exhibition takes place here, such as the Höhenrausch, set partly high above the city roofs on a specially designed wooden construction. This year, the Sinnesrausch exhibition will take visitors to a twisted world of sensory illusion.

Or Alternatively…

Don’t forget to reward yourself with a piece of Linzertorte cake – named after the city – in one of Linz’ many traditional and cosy coffee houses.
