Austria’s Most Beautiful Village

This is not your usual holiday destination. On first glance, you might doubt that the Alpbachtal region in Tirol is even real. Perhaps you’ll have to pinch yourself to make sure you’re awake.

Why? Because it’s almost too good to be true. It’s no coincidence that the region is home to Alpbach, which was named Austria’s most beautiful village – the picturesque wooden houses decorated with colourful flowers, set against a backdrop of rugged mountains might have you pause for a moment to marvel. And it doesn’t stop there: When you feel the spray of water from a stream running through a wild, rocky gorge, you will finally know: Yes, this is real.

A Family of Brits in Alpbachtal in Tirol: In Search of the Perfect Selfie

We sent Nick, Janneke and their two cheeky boys on a mission this summer: Have a blast in Alpbachtal in Tirol – and bring back the perfect selfie! In a region filled with adventures, it was hard to choose. See for yourself:

Now Make It Yours!

Considering a trip to Alpbachtal in Tirol now? Let us help you to make it yours: Find Nick and Janneke’s itinerary below, then pick, choose and switch out activities as you like!

“Lauser Sauser” Alpine Coaster (00:15)

Nick, Janneke and their boys started out with a family must-do: The Lauser Sauser Alpine Coaster, a two-seater sledge that reaches speeds of up to 140 km/h and includes two 360° twists.

Or Alternatively…

Bubbly, ice-cold water all around you, bracing yourself for the current, being scared and elated and proud all at once: Try Alpbachtal’s White Water Adventures, from swimming to rafting and kayaking.

Looking down, you might regret your decision for a second. But once you’ve conquered balancing beams, hanging bridges and steel ropes at the Alpbachtal High Ropes Course, you wouldn’t want it any other way.

Town of Rattenberg (00:33)

There was quite a lot to experience for our family in the town of Rattenberg: They explored the town on foot and visited the Kisslinger glass factory, where they witnessed the mysterious art of glassblowing. Then it was time to cool down with homemade ice cream at Café Hacker.

Or Alternatively…

Have you ever seen a cake being baked over an open fire? This is how a local specialty called Prügeltorte cake is prepared. Make sure to catch this spectacle while you’re here – for instance at Kaiserhaus restaurant in the village of Brandenberg, every Thursday from 2:30 pm.

Alpbachtal has even more culinary treats to offer: Try the local cheese, Alpbachtaler Heumilchkäse (“meadow milk cheese”), hike to one of the many traditional mountain huts to have a “Jause” (a substantial snack consisting of bacon, cheese, and bread), or visit the local farmers’ market in Brixlegg.

Bathing Lake (00:58) & Hiking the Gorges (01:13)

Nick, Janneke and their boys spent a relaxed afternoon at one of the region’s many bathing lakes – these range from a village lake with children’s play area to a 7-metre-deep mountain lake. The family also hiked Alpbachtal’s gorges, a nature experience like no other.

Or Alternatively…

Want to see even more? Consider hiring an e-bike to explore the diverse biking routes of the Alpbachtal region – from mountain paths running through sweetly scented meadows to panoramic lake routes.
