The Schlumberger Wine Cellars provide a fascinating mixture of history, tradition and the future on your city break in Vienna. You are invited you to take a stroll through the 300-year old world of Austria's oldest sparkling wine cellars, learning about the "Méthode Traditionnelle" that originated from Champagne. Try your hand at the riddling of the Schlumberger bottles and look forward to sampling a glass of Schlumberger at the end of your tour.

Austrian "Sekt" for 175 years

Underneath Vienna’s charming 19th disctrict, an impressive network of cavernous cellars holds precious merchandise: Schlumberger’s wine cellar stocks barrels and bottles of its sparkling wine, called "Sekt" here. Robert Alwin Schlumberger produced Austria’s first "Sekt" in 1842, after learning about champagne production in France. He was a quick study – soon it was being served at the Imperial Court.

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

To this day, the Méthode Traditionelle is used to make these sparkling wines, requiring at least a two-year maturation. Here, 16 m below the busy streets of the capital, the long passageways and cellars form a labyrinth 2.4 km long, and hold several million bottles.
On a tour of the cellar, you can see how the Sekt is stored to ferment in a temperature-regulated environment. After maturing in large wooden barrels, the cuvée is subjected to an additional fermentation process in the bottle, giving it its exceptional taste. You'll learn how the fermenting yeast is trapped in the bottle neck and carefully released.

Amazing Atmosphere

The cellar’s vaulted ceilings and rough stone walls create an intimate atmosphere, perfect for a tasting. At the end of your tour you'll get a complimentary glass of Schlumberger -- but you can also go all out and book a full tasting of five or more glasses. Prices start at € 19 (approx. £ 17). The cellars can even be rented out for events or weddings, giving your celebration a cathedral-like feel.

Near the Historic Town of Grinzing

The Schlumberger cellar is located in the beautiful 19th district, just a short walk from the Spittelau underground stop. After you’ve got a taste of Vienna’s history at Schlumberger, take a 10 minute drive further north to see the old core of Grinzing. Grinzing used to be a cosy town outside the city walls and retains its charm today. The Pfarrkirche church takes you back to a time when Vienna’s outskirts had a pastoral feel. If you can't get enough of Austrian wine, be sure to visit a Heurigen, a traditional, cosy restaurant serving wine and (small) meals.
