The Styrian Wine Route

The province of Styria is one of Austria’s most important wine regions. In its south, a trip along the Wine Route is a great way to experience nature and taste the region’s wines.

The 30-kilometre Styrian Wine Route in the south of Austria traverses the province’s biggest wine-growing region. Along the way, you’ll encounter bold and fruity wines, beautiful vineyards along winding roads, and friendly locals waiting to raise a glass with you. The route connects the small towns of Straß in Steiermark and Oberhaag, making its way through the lovely communities of Ehrenhausen, Arnfels, and Leutschach. Located close to the Slovenian border, the Wine Route can be easily reached from Graz in 45 minutes.

The Best Way to Enjoy Austrian Wine: Buschenschanken

Along the route, the most common kind of restaurant is the so-called Buschenschank. Usually located on the grounds of the vineyard, a Buschenschank serves local wine as well as regional, homemade snacks or meals. It’s the most authentic and immediate way to experience Austria’s wine country.
