Must-Sees at Vienna’s Haus der Musik

The virtual conductor and other interactive installations playfully turn children and adults from mere listeners into conductors, composers and musicians. At the Haus der Musik, you’ll not only learn about Vienna’s musical history, you’ll discover music itself from an entirely different perspective. If you only have limited time to explore, here are three not-to-miss features for children and adults alike:
virtual conductor
For music lovers it's a dream within a dream, guiding your own all-star ensemble in the world's capital of classical music. Your average orchestra conductor trains decades for that coveted post. Now, a far easier route exists, thanks to Vienna's interactive sound museum and its "Virtual Conductor" technology. Set in the historical palace of Archduke Karl in the old city center, the Haus der Musik lets visitors explore Austria's musical heritage at every level - and then contribute their own musical talent in real time.
Choose your music, hoist the electronic baton and step before a video projection of the fabled Vienna Philharmonic inside Musikverein’s golden concert hall. Your movements control these virtual musicians, and what might begin as an ordinary day ends with your conducting the Blue Danube waltz, the Annen Polka, Mozart’s Little Night Music, the Radetzky March, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5 or Strauss’ Orpheus-Quadrille. It’s an unforgettable experience that will ring in your ears for a long time.

virto|stage
This interesting installation allows you to shape your very own music and opera experience. With your own movements and gestures, influence storyline, stage design and music of the opera, creating a unique piece of music that reflects your personality. virto|stage is a virtual stage resembling an opera house, complete with stage, loges and tiers. There are two different settings that feature two distinct music pieces:
Zooconcert was specifically created for young visitors and takes them on a musical adventure trip. Curious explorers are in for an exciting play-along fairy tale. Zeitperlen, on the other hand, is a multi-media opera by Johannes Deutsch. Let your own emotions be your guide as you influence the mood of the visual projections around you. Learn how music, lyrics and visuals merge to create the Gesamtkunstwerk that you helped shape.

STAIRPLAY - Music Step by Step
If you’d like to learn how to read music, or would like to teach your kids, you’ll find that this new interactive installation is the best and most entertaining way to delve into the world of sheet music. Learn all about notes in just a few steps. Literally.
Fixed stairs at the beginning of the musical tour function as a piano with 13 movement-sensitive steps as keys, each illuminating the corresponding note on a wall panel. The relationship between instruments and notes becomes visible instantly, in a simple and playful way. If you prefer to play "ensemble" music, go ahead and create sounds on the staircase together with your friends and family. The interactive musical staircase combines dry theory with a fun experience, making it easier and more entertaining than ever before to learn the notes.

The HOUSE OF MUSIC is open daily from 10am – 10pm
