Family Fun: MuseumsQuartier Wien

With about 70 cultural facilities, the MuseumsQuartier Wien (MQ) is one of the largest art & culture complexes in the world – and a perfect destination for you and your children! While the big museums and cultural institutions offer tours and workshops for children, the complex has three cultural spaces dedicated to kids: the ZOOM Kindermuseum, the DSCHUNGEL WIEN Theater for Young Audiences and the wienXtra-kinderinfo.

ZOOM Kindermuseum

The ZOOM Kindermuseum offers four areas for children ages 14 and under: the Exhibition, presents complicated subjects in a hands-on way. At the Studio, kids ages three to 12 can explore design, painting and drawing. The Animation Film Studio lets kids and teens ages eight to 14 experiment with animation, film and sound production. Finally, the Ozean is an adventure zone for kids ages eight months to six years.

DSCHUNGEL WIEN Theater for Young Audiences
The DSCHUNGEL WIEN’s program covers every aspect of the performing arts, from drama, narrative, puppet, and musical theater to opera, dance, and interdisciplinary forms for all ages. It shows premieres by Viennese theater groups, guest performances and festivals, as well as workshops, installations, and dialogue events.

wienXtra-kinderinfo
Here, parents will find free comprehensive information on recreational activities in Vienna for children ages 13 and under. A play area is even available for children to explore while parents research the many available activities in the city.

The Big Museums
For children exploring the big museums, the mumok and Leopold Museums have some exciting activities.

At the mumok, children ages four and older will love the Children’s Art Transporter. This small wooden studio on wheels contains different art materials and ideas for exploring the museum. Also at the mumok, the x-small Studio, held the first and third Sunday each month, is an interactive experience for children ages four to six. Meanwhile the weekly Children’s Workshop, for six to 12 years olds, brings special guests to lead experiments with artistic techniques.

At the Leopold Museum, children five years and older can explore the museum with tailored tours and workshops through the exhibitions. Discover the secrets of selected artworks and find inspiration for the ensuing workshops.

Every Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm, children between six and 12 years old can enjoy creative workshop afternoons at the LEO Kids Atelier. Children listen to exciting stories about the artists and their projects and draw inspiration to live out their own creativity by painting, drawing and experimenting with different materials.

Although the workshops at the Leopold Museum are held in German, children from all over the world are welcome. Advanced registration is strongly suggested.

Another attraction for the whole family is the “MQ Amore” sculpture park and mini-gold course in the courtyard in front of the MQ. There, you can experience contemporary art in a completely different way: through a round of mini-golf. At “MQ Amore”, each of the 12 mini-golf courses is a work of art. Navigating your ball through the course, you face challenges set by the artists. Suddenly, your fun round of golf will deal with larger contexts, geographical, and social themes.
