Our Favorite Non-Museum Moments at the MQ

0 / 0
Not only is the MQ one of the largest "districts" of contemporary and modern art in the world, but there is lots to see outside its museums, studios, and performance spaces. A lively restaurant and cafe scene and artsy shopping attract locals and visitors to the MQ's iconic courtyard. It is to contemporary Vienna what the coffeehouse was to the Vienna of Freud and Torberg: a place to meet friends and linger for hours, discussing the latest art install.

1) Enjoy coffee and cake at Corbaci

After marveling at modern international and Austrian art at LEOPOLD Museum or mumok, take a break at cafe Corbaci. Delicious food, refreshing drinks, friendly staff, affordable prices, and a beautiful setting are not mutually exclusive, as the cozy spot proves. Corbaci puts a Mediterranean twist on Austrian cuisine and the stunningly ornate tile ceiling alone is worth the visit! Outdoor seating is available in the summer.

2) Pick up quirky souvenirs at MQ Point

Design gifts and small curiosities abound at the MQ's main museum shop. The museum complex makes a point of featuring Austrian designers and local products to support the artist community and give visitors an authentic shopping experience. You can even buy the iconic cube furniture form the MQ's courtyard! Other MQ shops carry contemporary Viennese fashion, music, and exhibition merch.

3) Lounge and mingle with locals in the sprawling courtyard

A special energy roams the MQ's courtyard. Maybe it's because you're surrounded by thousands of artworks on all sides, or because there are crowds of chatty people strewn over the lounge chairs and water basins. Soak in the feeling of being completely immersed in Viennese local life between musuem visits and get some sun on summer days. There's always a cup of coffee, or a glass of Grüner Veltliner nearby.

4) Grab dinner at Glacis Beisl

After a successful day of creative exploring, come here to experience an authentic Viennese bistro, locally called a Beisl. Hidden away at the back of the MuseumsQuartier, the menu offers lovingly prepared traditional Viennese cuisine. In summer, the delicious food can be enjoyed outdoors in the restaurant’s delightful garden.
