    Erl's Stunning Alpine Music Festival

0 / 0
Erl, a village of just 1,600 people in the Tirolean Unterland region, doesn't need help charming visitors. With its handful of inns -- and sizable number of cows -- it can appear like a quiet, yet stunning, Alpine village. But a fascinating history and a lively cultural community has made it anything but.

Since 1998, an annual music and arts festival transforms Erl into a cosmopolitain culture hub for fans of Verdi, Schubert, and Co. The Tyrol Festival Erl was founded under the artistic leadership of Gustav Kuhn who hails from nearby Salzburg. The celebrated and occasionally rebellious conductor performed at concert halls and opera houses around the globe himself. In Erl he found an opportunity to fulfill his lifelong dream of staging a music and opera festival that inspires and supports young musicians, and that keeps the passion and love for music alive.

The people of Erl are deeply involved with the music festival. Locals participate as actors, extras, fire fighters, technicians, hosts and more. This close relationship between the community and the music festival organizers is part of what makes the Tyrol Festival Erl so unique. Erl has become an insider's secret among classical music lovers, and enthusiasts visit from around the world.

The 2019 Summer program runs from July 4 to July 28, with a total of 25 performances. The program features a variety of classical concert and opera performances, including Verdi's Aida, Rossini's Guillaume Tell, and Walter Braunfels' The Birds.

A winter festival schedule will run from the end of December, 2019 to the beginning of January, 2020, positioning Erl nicely for a musical pilgrimage combined with a European ski vacation at the nearby resorts. Erl is also just minutes from the picturesque medieval town of Kufstein and its historic mint tower.

During spring, Erl hosts the Piano Days, which are all about the instrument. A concert schedule with works by Beethoven, Liszt, or Chopin will make any classical music fan swoon. In the fall, the newly conceived Erntedank festival (Austrian Thanksgiving) forms a wonderful cultural interlude with stellar performances under the direction of Maestro Gustav Kuhn!

Erl is easily reached, with Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich all an hour's drive away. Regional rail service to Erl is available from Innsbruck and Munich. Plenty of parking is available, as well as shuttle service to the festival hall.
