“An incredible number of birds nest here year-round, more than 170 different types.”

Birdwatching at Lake Neusiedl

The lake's grassland creates an unusual scenery in eastern Austria. Its reed belts and salt ponds are home to a thriving fauna of birds and other wild animals.
Gazing over Neusiedlersee and its National Park, the sense of open space is striking. The lake, which is about an hour drive from Vienna, is not towered over by mountains, but surrounded by a flat marshland. This gives Neusiedlersee See-Seewinkel National Park an almost exotic appearance, reminiscent of the African plains - a fitting resemblance, since you can go on a Birdwatching Safari to see the park’s wildlife close up.

On your safari, you can spot over 300 different species of birds, out of which 170 nest locally, more than anywhere else on the European mainland. The Seewinkel National Park has been a well-kept secret amongst birdwatchers since the 1960s. All birds - from the proud eagle to the tiny chiffchaff - are native to the lake. The park's experienced rangers know how to bring out a passion for birdwatching in visitors, even if you don’t consider yourself a birder. Spotting a rare animal through the telescope is an exciting moment for anyone.

Exploring the area on the east shore of Lake Neusiedl is an experience in its own right, even without binoculars. The countryside that extends from the reed beds, through the salt ponds, to the Hanság marshlands in Hungary, opens your eyes to a surprising facet of nature in Austria.
